- with variants between 2 and 8 stages -
SELF GUIDED ROUTE WITH GPS
IF YOU NEED TO LOSE YOURSELF, YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK
This PIRINEOS PUNTO BIKE proposal is in broad strokes, a Self Guided Pack which includes the Half Board Accommodations, the Tracks and information of the route and the Luggage Transport from hotel to hotel.
Apart from the main lines that we present here, there are other options of less or more days available as variants. Some of them are already listed in the "Variants and their rates" tab and others are prepared in a customized way to those who request them.
It will be strange to see the stages classified by letters instead of numbers. The reason is simple; We wanted to maintain the identity of the stage regardless of the combination we make. This factor, combined with the different numbers of days that make up the different proposals, and the possible variation of the starting point of the same, causes the effect that what for one group is stage 1 for another is eg 3. And this will ultimately make the final order of the tracks of a given proposal a letter code of type eg G-C-D-E, something more understandable than 7-3-4-5.

NAFAR BASOAK TRAIL | IRATI - RONCESVALLES route is located is located in the central area of what already belonging to the Atlantic Pyrenees, comes to be known as PIRINEO NAVARRO. This is characterized by lower levels and softer shapes than the incipient abrupt Pyrenees that begins in the Pico de Ori - first 2,000 of the mountain range if we look at it from the Atlantic - and point from which few peaks will be below that altitude.
In the area that concerns us, the Pyrenean landscape has its own identity; immense forests - of beech forests in the highlands, and oak and boxwood in the lowlands - cleared fields - the result of the ancient pastoral and livestock activity - and small villages settled on the slopes, make up an easily recognizable landscape, settled in an older Pyrenees - and therefore more eroded - than the rest, and whose peaks range between 1,000 and 1,500 meters of altitude.
We are talking about a territory so vast that we dare to assure that despite being in such a well-known and frequented environment as the Selva de Irati and Roncesvalles, it hides trails, traces of ancient roads and even mountains unknown by a large part of the people accustomed to the area.
All the lands have their history and stories, and the PIRINEO NAVARRO obviously was not going to be less. This also has the added component of having been, in different historical waves, the entry point to the Iberian Peninsula of the different human groups, genes and culture - all in the same Pack - that make up the society that we have today.
Halfway between the humanized and the "wild", this geography allows us to perceive bits of the past accompanying our journey. Without much effort, stone totems - dolmens and cromlechs - from the Bronze Age come into view, the sheep you see are grazing on those slopes since the Neolithic ... in the Aizpea cave - next to the hotel where you stay. in Aribe - the remains of the "grandmother of Navarra" appeared, a woman who lived here 8,000 years ago.
The Roman past emerges on top of Urkulu in the form of a tower and in the Zaldua meadows - 2 kilometers from the hotel in Aurizberri - in the form of a recent excavation of the Roman city of Iturissa. The obligatory road that accompanied any Roman city is also emerging through the entrenched Valles de Arce, to the South, and Luzaide to the North.
In our descent from the peaks that fly over Roncesvalles towards Luzaide and in the subsequent ascent the next day on the other side of the valley, it will be difficult not to imagine the line - due to the narrowness of the valley - Charlemagne's army being attacked by the Vascones ambushed in the slopes in which it has come to be known historically as "Roncesvalles Battle".
In practically all the peaks, the remains of old military fortresses are visible. The well-structured insitu interpretation called "War Archeology" developed by the RAK Project, which we will occasionally find in the form of panels and QR codes along some sections of the route, will help us understand the importance of these fortresses in those moments of the history.
The westernmost part of the route corresponds to the Pyrenees that surround Roncesvalles. An important influence of the Camino de Santiago is perceived in them. The Camino crosses the Pyrenees from North to South in this area and leaves its mark - sometimes with scenes close to surrealism - in the environment of the towns and mountain passes through which it passes.

View of the semi-desert Valle de Arce from the broad summit of the unknown Monte Corona.
Landscapes from the mountains. Deep in the Valley and semi hidden by the density of the forest, Gorraiz de Arce, maximum exponent of the Deep Navarre.
Little accustomed to contact with people, the animals here have a "point" of savages.
The Irati River strives to be seen in the forest density that it itself produces.
Aezkoa and Mount Berrendi - tomorrow's work - seen from the Ariztokia viewpoint.
The Irati River makes its way to the South accompanied by a forest mass that does not make any attempt to disappear.
The abandoned Aribe Bathhouse scatters around it the memory of social life - in not so remote times - of the Irati Valley.
Up
Daily landscape of the Aezkoa Valley in the first kilometers of the stage.
At the base of the Berrendi, the first summit to the East of the Sierra de Abodi, Hiriberri / Villanueva de Aezkoa, "standard" population of the Navarrese Pyrenees.
Rocky barrier characteristic of Berrendi in today's geography.
After the break on the southern slope, the forest takes control again on the descent down the northern slope of Berrendi.
The white of Orbara stands out in the winter forest of the high zone of Irati.
ometimes the forest will be confusing, attention to GPS!
The natural viewpoint of Mount Ugaibel shows us the "Irati Territory" as few places know how to do it.
Up
Dam of the Irabia swamp in the heart of the Irati Forest.
Ocher colored station at NAFAR BASOAK TRAIL.
Eastern limit of the route, in the background, the 2000 meters of Pico Ori, close the horizon.
At least curious.
Autumn begins in the grasslands of Irati.
Sheep protecting themselves from the wind on the slopes of the Mendizar (old mountain).
The mass of Errozate will become a company for a long time if - not having fog - we decide to follow the Mendizar top line instead of the GR 12 along which the route runs.
Up
Urkulu tower on the Col de Arnostegi - a colossus among the road bike mountain passes of the area -
Remains of military fortifications on top of Bentarte.
Leitzarateka. surroundings. A long descent begins towards Luzaide.
"Intense" forest on the North slope of Astobizkar.
The Camino de Santiago bursts into the route with force. For a couple of kilometers - the ones that we will travel in the opposite direction - the show is guaranteed.
Descent to Luzaide / Valcarlos from the top of Leitzarateka.
Up
Mehatze, first peak of the day, in this stage we will have many.
Hidden corners in the abrupt valley of Valcarlos.
The stage runs almost entirely through the chain that cuts the Pyrenean axis from North to South with a union at the top of Lindus. If the weather does not prevent it, the views on both sides of the Atlantic Pyrenees are unique.
The day tour continues in sight as we ascend to the Mendiaundi (big mountain), the last summit of the stage.
Archeology of War on Mendiaundi summit.
Use the zoom. Machine gun bunker in the center of extreme beauty.
We descend Mendiaundi observing how the summit of the Ori puts a stop to the Irati Forest.
When the cows are absent, the deer regain their territory. End of stage in Aurizberri.
Up
Forceful mass of Adi seen from the Aratun pass.
NAFAR BASOAK TRAIL section coinciding with the GR 12 on the north side of the Adi. In the foreground Bunker of Line P, built throughout the Pyrenees to defend a possible allied attack on Spain at the end of World War II.
The powerful "Cencellada" - process during which the humidity of the trees freezes - helps us to visualize that the north face of the Adi constitutes the first remaining glacial basin on this side of the Pyrenees.
The well-structured insitu interpretation called "War Archeology" developed by the RAK Project in the mountains near Burguete will help us understand aspects related to Line P bunkers - like this one in the photo - and others related to the remains of the forts that are intuited in the tops of many of these mountains and linked to the different wars with the French.

ORREAGAKO GATAZKA
2 Stages / 2 Nights
The Roncesvalles Battle Trail
WALK THE MOUNTAINS AROUND THE BATTLE AREA
No historical vestige marks the exact place of the events. Taking into account the narrowness and intricacy of the valley through which the remains of the ancient Roman road towards Burdigala (Bordeaux) are already appearing, it is logical to think that an ambush throughout the valley floor was what allowed the Vascones to inflict in the 8th century a defeat to Charlemagne's army of sufficient caliber to avoid being forgotten by history and thus be transmitted in the collective imagination as the Battle of Roncesvalles; ORREAGAKO GATAZKA in the language of those Vascones.
If, as we say, we do not know where it happened, what we are sure of is that the watchtowers that make up the mountains that we are going to cover during the 2 days that this proposal lasts, are the same from which those Vascones controlled the movements of the army of the francs and the same ones from which they sent via "horn message" the instructions for the action, all this provided that there was no fog that day, of course!
We are facing a route that apart from the historical vicissitudes has an exceptional geographical and sports appeal. The fact that its layout is oriented perpendicular to the Pyrenean mountain range and geographically somewhat separated from its central axis, makes the views at all times exceptional. On the other hand, the clean terrain of the high areas allows to run - for those who choose to do it - with comfort in practically the entire route except for some sections during the ascent to Mehatze Peak at the beginning of the 1st stage.
As far as toughness is concerned, the measurements are those of an authentic mountain marathon - 43,1 kilometers - spread over 2 stages, and without excessive unevenness; 2.380 meters.
During the entire 1st stage it is difficult not to go back in history more than 1,000 years after the events that have given this route its name and thus find ourselves with the columns of Napoleon's army making our own journey in an attempt to reach and break Siege of Pamplona at the end of the War of Independence in which it came to be called The Battle of the Pyrenees. These events are reported on the route by the QR codes that we will find in various places on the route.
This method of information will also accompany us during the first kilometers of the 2nd stage in which we will also add to our route the factor "Camino de Santiago" which will quickly make us understand its nickname "The European Highway" with its transfer of pilgrims who occasionally they can become authentic "columns" that fortunately we will cross without consequences.
Above all these environments, it would be a mistake not to warn that what is currently going to monopolize the character of the route is the pastoral environment, which despite all the described vicissitudes, has been giving shape and human character for at least 5,000 years to this landscape.
