BASOAK Aralar - Irati MTB is a mountain bike route in its purest form for mountain biking. It crosses the North of Navarre from West to East joining in its walk the Aralar Range, in the 1st stage and the Selva de Irati, in the last one. These two first quality Natural Spaces, join in the central stages, the Ultzama Valley (the Navarre Switzerland) and the endless forests full of trails of "flow" of Quinto Real and Roncesvalles recently reinterpreted by the modern philosophy of tracks of BTT developed in the area by the MTB and Trail EREMUA Center.
The result is an online cycling route with a quality difficult to overcome throughout the peninsular territory.

The PIRINEOS PUNTO BIKE proposal to pedal the route is in broad strokes, a Self Guided Pack which includes the Half Board Accommodations, the Tracks of the route and the Luggage Transport from hotel to hotel.
When the cyclists use their own vehicle, we take care of transferring them in Taxibike to the starting point of BASOAK on the morning of the first day so that at the end of the tour their vehicles are at the end point of the route.
In the proposal can also participate non-cyclists as companions.

Stage A of BASOAK MTB is the "Aralar Range" stage.
After a first foray into the Altzania Range in which we will cross the impressive path of the Millennial Oaks and a succession of remains of various dolmens, the track of the route enters the Aralar Range. Here there is a clear difference between a 1st part ascending on the Gipuzkoa slope and a 2nd part in the Navarre area where, after going flat for several kilometers through the top of the mountain range, we will proceed to descend to the valley at Lekunberri.
With an ancient pastoral tradition, the Aralar range is currently a Nature Reserve which continues to maintain this tradition despite being in the vicinity of some of the most industrialized areas of the Basque Country.

Stage B: Lekunberri - Zubiri - Distance: 60 km   Unevenness: 1.550 m

For almost 40 kilometers the profile of this 2nd stage is made up of an unbroken succession of meadows and forests regularly interspersed with the typical villages of the Ultzama Valley.
Without large slopes but with constant ups / downs we cross a territory that is "friendly" but in which it begins to be present the isolation that is gradually spreading throughout all the peninsular rural territories.
If we relax a lot we will face the last section of the day. A constant "wall" with more than 700 meters of unevenness completely alters the profile of the stage and requires us to stand firm. After one last effort, surely setting foot on the ground, we reached the top of Burdindogi Peak and we carefully fitted the helmet to drop us by the 600 meters of the "Carboneras" route - of the new EREMUA Trail / BTT Center - to the lake of Eugi.
Lovers of the toughest descents may choose, if they wish, to descend other more demanding routes such as Magnun or King Goitean. Regardless of the chosen descent it will be difficult not to arrive at the hotel with a smile on your mouth.

Stage B begins and the Aralar Ranges becomes an horizon.

Already in the first kilometers the forest -BASOAK- takes center stage.

Etxaleku, "type" town in the Ultzama Valley.

The prairies of the Ultzama Valley end abruptly in the forest front of the Quinto Real. We could say that here we enter the Pyrenees.

Stage C: Zubiri - Irati - Distance: 55 km   Unevenness: 1.960 m

If we had to choose a Queen Stage for BASOAK MTB we would surely decide on this stage C.
"Camouflaged" in the green line of the profile we find 2 descents of type "Eremua". The 1st deposit us in the vicinity of Zilbeti, and the 2nd, the so-called Balseta, on the equator of the stage in Sorogain. On the way we will have left behind the almost disappeared "Gernika de Picasso" painted on the trees, the bunkers of P Line - built during "Franco's Spain" to repel a possible Allied attack after World War 2 - and all the almost "magical" environment of the northern slope of the Adi Peak that we will have bordered while we contemplate - if time permits - the small rural cores of the Basque-French Pays at our feet.

We leave the territory "Quinto Real" and we go into "Roncesvalles" territory. The P Line keeps emerging sporadically, the information panels and QR codes that also arise sporadically in specific places, interpret the "Archeology of war" and tell us about the battles that developed on these same slopes during the French withdrawal in the War of Independence - slopes in which we, fortunately in our own bike way, also fight -. The sheep, which have been where you see them for more than 5,000 years, tell us about the shepherd past. Roncesvalles, which also appears there, tells us about centuries of pilgrims and battles between Franks and Vascones.
The descents are here more "flows" than in the 1st part and after descending the "avenue" that suddenly deposits us in the Weapons Factory of Orbaitzeta, we have almost finished the stage and we can to go back in time again and imagine the frantic activity that developed between those now old walls during the years in which the cannonballs came out of their furnaces and workshops and made it possible to create an empire "where the sun never set".

Forest roads, usual in valley bottoms

"Fauna" typical and abundant in the environment. With us we are all already.

Weapons Factory of Orbaizeta, we are very close to the end of the stage, so we can "get lost" for a while between its ruins and its history.

Stage D: Irati - Irati - Distance: 59 km   Unevenness: 1.265 m

Stage D of BASOAK MTB is the "SELVA DE IRATI" stage, the final icing on the excess of forest that we have already accumulated from the previous stages.
A tarmac road helps us quickly get into the heart of the "matter." The pace slows down while we perimeter the Irabia Swamp along the technical paths of its southern slope, and it is accelerated again by the succession of pistes and wide paths that define the track as we go forward "crossing out" objectives. Casas de Irati, The Cubo Fall... a wall that makes us stand up, and we enter the Irati of the northern face, the Basque-French, where the asphalted roads reprint rhythm to the track.
The character of total forest and wood environment predominant until now begins to combine with areas of pastures and livestock environment culminating in the wide top of the Okabe. This, if the fog does not prevent it, will become a practically unforgettable 360º viewpoint only blocked to the east by the imposing mass of the Ori Peak - the first 2000, on this side, of the Pyrenean mountain range - which we almost seem to be able to touch. The megalithic complex of Hilarrita appears on the side of the road, which with its waste of 26 cromlechs constitutes one of the most important funerary groups - if not the most - of Pyrenean prehistory.

We are already going down. Until the end of the stage - except for a slight comeback to "relocate" - everything will be down or flat. Grassy hills ... stretches of "singletrack" ... tracks and pastoral shepherds, maybe some boring dog ... Bridge of the Question ... Swamp of Irabia again ... more trails along the sometimes uncomfortable Channel Betolegi, through which the waters that begin to give shape to the Irati River are channeled ... and we have finished BASOAK Aralar - Irati.

The route alternates wooded areas with others of a more pastoral nature.

We reached the top of the Okabe without getting off the bike. When the fog does not prevent it, its 1466 meters of altitude and its location in the center of the Pyrenean axis make up a spectacular viewpoint.

If you have doubths, do not hesitate and use some of the buttons below, we respond quickly.

  • Best time to go: The route can be done at any time of the year except in winter.
Summer and autumn are usually the most pleasant seasons; in the spring there may be mud at certain points of the route. In any case, we have to say that the punctual weather of the days in which we are going to make the route is more important than the time itself.

At the end of Autumn the days are short, but more than enough for our purpose. The Quinto Real and Irati forests "burn" with reds and ochres in those days, and the experience of pedaling during the day and taking a walk at sunset in that sea of colors reinforces the experience.
  • Type of tracks: In general, trails and tracks with more physical than technical demand, both uphill and downhill.
For the technically demanding sections - that sometimes there are - we offer alternative tracks, although the simplest way not to distort the route is to get off the bike.
  • Ideal bike: Any mountain bike.
  • Orientation: The route is followed by a GPS track.
  • Ciclability: Depending on the technical skills and the strengths of each one, the route is 98% cyclable.
  • Philosophy: The route is designed so that the stages can be completed and we still have a large part of the day to enjoy the place where we are.
  • Provisioning: Although sometimes we find refreshment points, depending on the time of the year we can find that some establishments are closed. In the services waypoint file that we deliver at the beginning of the route the information of each stage is given.
